Driving Innovation Together: GWM Commercial Vehicles and Cummins Usher in a New Era of Hybrid Heavy-Duty Trucks

BEIJING, China — Cummins (China) Investment Co., Ltd. recently visited GWM Commercial Vehicles for high-level discussions aimed at advancing hybrid heavy-duty truck technology and accelerating the transition to greener, smarter commercial transportation. Led by Ma Ji, General Manager of the Engine Division’s Marketing and Sales, the Cummins delegation met with Tang Haifeng, Vice President of GWM Motors and Chairman of GWM Commercial Vehicles, along with other senior executives to explore future collaboration in product innovation and energy transformation.

During the visit, GWM Commercial Vehicles showcased its latest developments in hydrogen fuel and hybrid technologies. Ma and his team toured the Unis Energy Hydrogen Testing Center, SVOLT Energy Laboratory, and the GWM R&D Center, gaining in-depth insights into the company’s R&D capabilities in hydrogen technology, power batteries, and complete vehicle development.

As a key partner, Cummins has been closely collaborating with GWM on powertrain integration. The delegation focused on the Hi4-G hybrid system, which combines Cummins’ high-efficiency engines with GWM’s self-developed 8-speed DHT transmission and hybrid platform. This integration optimizes power output and energy consumption, delivering a more efficient and low-carbon solution tailored for long-haul logistics operations.

Sun Yu, Director of GWM Commercial Vehicles’ Vehicle Technology Research Institute, detailed the Hi4-G system’s technical advantages, highlighting its industry-leading hybrid integration capabilities. He also shared performance data from various complex user operation scenarios, demonstrating the system’s efficiency and reliability. The Cummins team also test-drove the G-Series hybrid heavy-duty trucks equipped with Hi4-G technology, praising the vehicles for their exceptional handling, responsiveness, and operational stability.

Ma noted that GWM’s technological accumulation and innovation in the new-energy sector are impressive. He emphasized that both companies are committed to strengthening technical collaboration to deliver more competitive commercial vehicle solutions.

Tang added, “Cummins is more than a critical component supplier — it is a strategic partner in co-creating technology. GWM Commercial Vehicles will continue deepening cooperation with Cummins to meet the growing demand for greener, higher-efficiency power solutions, injecting new momentum into the commercial vehicle industry and ushering in a new era of hybrid heavy-duty trucks.”
